"SOUTH SEAS CRUISE"'
UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S CLUB
A sense of the glamour of the South Seas was brought to the University Women's Club room on a> recent afternoon, when Miss Wilkinson spoke im formally about .her experiences while on the Islands cruise in the Monowai last July.
The shipping company, she said, had made every possible arrangement for the comfort and entertainment of the 300 passengers, both on board and at the ports of call. At Nukualofa and Vavau the simple charm and dignity of the Tongans were much admired, and at the latter port a picnic which included the Swallows' Cave was greatly enjoyed. ,At Apia there was much to interest, many visiting "Vailima," once the home, of Robert Louis Stevenson, but now the residence of the administrator .Some even made the steep climb to Stevenson's tomb. The native huts and houses, built entirely without the use of nails, were sources of great interest, and the Samoans were most hospitable in inviting inspection. Suva, with its Street of All Nations, and its
interesting Chinese shops;' provided also a unique entertainment in the shape of the 'fire-walking ceremony. The renowned Roman Catholic Mission at Levuka was visited and greatly admired by many of .the pa-sengers. At the conclusion of the talk Miss Watson expressed to. the speaker the hearty thanks of the gathering.
