SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS
The monthly meeting of the Dominion executive of the South African War Veterans' Association was held at headquarters, Hunter Street, on'Thursdsy evening. The president, Mr. J. I. Goldsmith; presided. The secretary, Mr. J. H. E. Tilling, who has the interests of ex-South African servicemen at heart, nresented a very interesting agenda paper. The suggestion of a cottage settlement scheme, brought forward by the Tauranga Association at the last conference, was discussed, and it was resolved that the president, with Captain J. J. Clark, should seek an interview with the Minister of Agriculture.- the Hon. C. E. Macmillan. The secretary read an enthusiastic letter from Wairoa stating that an association had recently been formed there, and the president extended hearty congratulations to the organisers.
_Mention was made that in the Hawke's Bay earthquake the military figure of the South African memorial in Napier .had been deprived of its head. Funds had been raised for its replacement, and the matter of a permanent resting place for the memorial was under discussion with the local City Council. At present no satisfacJ .ajrangement had been arrived at, and the president, with Captain Clark, would shortly make a visit to Napier to assist the association in its efforts to secure a suitable site. It was decided to make personal representation to the Minister of Internal Affairs,-the Hon. Sir Alex. The Veterans' Allowance Bill was discussed, and the president stated that every effort would be made by the K.b.A. committee to have any anomalies removed. Regret, however, was expressed that provision for Imperial men had been deleted, and it Waif %? ped that the Present BiU was only the forerunner of more generous treatment in the near future, embiacing all war veterans, on similar hnes to the Bill recently passed by the Canadian Government. » it was resolved to support the South African War Veterans of England in their endeavour to get the Home Government to vary the conditions under winch the trustees administer the iransvaal War Funds of £400,000.
