LONDON, October 12.
The All Blacks defeated South of Scotland by 11 points to 8, after leading 5-3 at half-time. A crowd of 18,000 cheered Manchester when he led the team on the field at Hawick. They were the first New Zealanders to play in Scotland since 1905.
The teams were:—
New Zealand.—Gilbert; Ball, Mitchell, Hart; Griffiths, Solomon; SadlerPepper, Hore, Adkins, Reid, King, MoKenzie, Manchester, and Vorrath. South of Scotland.—Clark; McKie Breckenbridge,' Fairbairn, Thomson; Peden; Dorward; Grieve, Gray, Cottington, Beattie, Cowe, Barrie, Aitchison, and Shaw.
The home side won the first scrum, gaining 20 yards, and later got going on two occasions, but broke down owing to faulty handling. Gilbert missed an easy penalty .kick. Mitchell was defending well and found the line when South were pressing. The home side continued the pressure, Aitchison narrowly failing to score. A moment later, however, McKie crossed the line from a scrum and touched down. South of Scotland 3, New Zealand 0.
South were continually dangerous, Mitchell downing' McKie at a perilous moment. The All Blacks then broke away and Hart won a race for the Ball, which he touched down. Gilbert converted from in front of the posts. New Zealand 5, South of Scotland 3.
Then Solomon was almost over after a great run, • but was.-grassed. The New Zealanders, towards the end of the first spell, were'combining better and stormed, their-;. opponents* line several times. They were met by dour tackling. The forwards were not equal to the South of Scotland' pack, who were playing magnificently, both in the loose and the scrums. The spell ended ■with the score:— ""/ ": New Zealand .......... 5 South of Scotland ....... 3 HOME TEAM PRESSING. In the second-spell the home side were continually • pressing, and the backs almost' scorgd 'three or four times. Shaw, amid excitement, threw hirosplf ;oyer the*line arid converted his own try. South of Scotland 8, New Zealand 5. . : ' ; " .■ , South continued to be dominant, but Gilbert evened 'the scores with a penalty from 40 yards out. New Zealand 8, South of Scotland 8.
A minute later Vorrath scored a try from a forward rush at the corner, which Gilbert could riot convert.
