SOME SHARP ADVANCES
DEMAND FOR MATERIALS
LONDON, October 12.
The most spectacular feature of commodities has been the rise of nearly £17 in spot tin since October 4. United Kingdom stocks are estimated at 430 tons, the lowest in history. Offerings from the East are rapidly absorbed on the Continent, where most countries are buying war stocks. Italy also fruitlessly attempted to buy Bolivian and Nigerian shipments. The Malayan output is affected by labour troubles. If quotas are increased they are unlikely to.ease the tightness.
Rubber received a fillip from the Dutch Government's announcement that it was purchasing export licences for 20,000 tons from East India growers, indicating that Holland intends to enforce restrictions as far as possible. Copper restrictionists are anxious, and measures will probably be taken to increase production and check the rises.
Lead is in a healthier position, and the price touched the highest since 1930.
Comparisons of prices for metals, as quoted London, October 11, last with quotations on May 11, six months disclose the following advances, at per ton, spot quotations:—
