PASSING OF A VETERAN
A war veteran died in ft' stable at Southampton -police .station. recently. He -was Warrior, a 26-year-oldx-grey horse, who was in the Retreat from Mons and was afterwards presented to ; Southampton Police ' Force by Miss [Hilda Moore-on condition that once a 'year he was- taken, to her house in Southampton to attend a party. in : his honour. This practice was continued until Miss Moore's death' in>l932VAftef the Battle of Mons a remarkable operation was performed on ■• him, pieces of shrapnel being removed from near his heart. : He made > .splendid recovery: Warrior was-buried; in a quiet place on the'edge of ;the-town. His hooves.are to :be: given to the: local branch of - the' Old Contemptibles' Association, which la^t 'January* made him an honorary member and decorated him with the badge of their association and Mons ribbon. Another famous animal bearing the' same name and described as "the luckiest horse on the Western Front,'-' carried- MajorGeneral J. E. B. Seely, mow Lord Mottistone, all through the war.
