NO LONGER "HACKS"
WELLINGTON OVERSIGHTS
(By. "Rangatira.")
Among the. horses entered for "hack" events at the coming Wellington" Eacing Club's Spring Meeting are | several whose successes in the past might lead one to doubt whether they are eligible for the class, arid a checkup on the amounts certain selected horses have won. discloses that at least two of them should not have been entered for the class. The two are Sunee and Nightguard. Some of the 'others are found to be very close to the altered hack margin, requiring j only a single win to move over the border. ■ ,
As it happens Sunee and Nightguard would have bfeen ineligible even under the old rule. ' '
Siinee's o'wner-trairier (J. W. Lowe) was' apparently carrying "in his niind the fact that Sunee had won only £387 in first moneys when he made the nomination. But Sunee was the winner of the Champion Hack Handicap at the last Wellington Autumn Meeting, and the stake attached to that event for the winner was £260 (including the trophy, which' under the rules must be included in the value). Rule 178 (1) defines a "hack". as "a horse that has riot at any tune prior to time of entry for ap flat race, hurdle race, or steeplechase, as the case maybe, won such a race of the value of £200 or more to the winner, or such races of the aggregate value of £400 or more to the winner." It is under the first part of this rule that Sunee' is ineligible. ■ Sunee's nomination for the. October Hack Handicap oh the first, day is therefore ■■ voided. In the case of Nightguard the oversight has probably' been due to the fact that his present owner- <Mr. J. D. F. Corry) has not-always had him, and that his first three successes were gained in .other colours. Be that as it may, however, Nightguard. has won nine races worth in all £525 to the winner, which would have debarred him from entry even; under the rule as it was before it'was amended. , . There might be' a idoubt whether Nightguard in the entries lis. not meant for Nightlass, but Nightguard •is the name ; entered for -the. shorter hack events each day, an* Nightlass is separately in the two hack miles.
