OTAKI SEAT
MR. APPLETON AT STOKES
VALLEY
There was a record attendance at Stokes Valley on Saturday evening, when Mr. Will Appleton, the Independent candidate for Otaki, addressed electors. Mr. W. Bishop presided.
The candidate dealt particularly with unemployment and housing, and he outlined a scheme of State grants at a low rate1 of interest for the repair, renovation, and painting of house propei'ties in cases where neither the mortgagor nor the mortgagee could find the money. The advance would constitute a first charge on the property in much the same way as drainage loans from local bodies, and would be repayable in easy instalments over three to five years.
In reply to questions, Mr. Appleton said he would not vote to place Labour on the Treasury-benches, because ha did not consider they had the capacity for the job, and moreover, he strongly objected to the affairs of the country being run, not by Parliament but by a caucus in the Trades HalL
On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Henry Hawthorn, the candidate was accorded, a vote of thanks, and subsequently practically all of those present constituted themselves a committee to further his candidature.
