THE SEAMER FAIR
The annual fair which' was held on j July 15 at' Seamer, three miles from Scarborough, the Yorkshire; watering place, was founded sis far back as 1382, to take place on the feast of St. Martin and for seven days following. The same' royal grant established a weekly market. ~.....■■ In course. of time the market died out, and against its revival, towards the end of the sixteenth century, the burgesses of Scarborough vainly protested,, inhabitants of neighbouring villages testifying. that Seamer market was more accessible and better stocked than that of Scarborough, the'roads to which, town,: they said, were "evil and miry" in winter.:.- •: ■■.■'.'-.■
Seamer's right to hold a market and fair .was confirmed in 1609 by James the First. The fair is opened by the postmaster's recital of the charter.
