UNUSUAL FEATURES
There were i three unusual features connected with the opening of Parliament this afternoon. The first was that his Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Galway) was officiating as his 'Majesty's ■representative for the firstlime since his appointment'to the office. The second was that the Speaker of the House of Representatives (the Hon. Sir Charles Statham), who recently announced his intention of retiring from ; politics, was • probably participating for the last time in an opening of Parliament as the representative of the popular Chamber at least.' The third unusual feature was'that a new member <■ took his seat for the first time. This was the newly-elected member for Lyttelton, Mr. T. H.'McCombs. Mr. McCombs, who is the third member to represent the Lyttelton electorate during the life of the present • Parliament, was sworn in by the Speaker after members of the House of- Representatives had returned from the opening ceremony in the Legislative: Council. He was sponsored by the two Labour whips, Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Avon) and Mr. E. J. Howard (Christchurch South).
