Special forecast for Wellington:

North-westerly gale. Weather changeable and squally. Showers likely tonight.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon, today, is for strong winds to gales, between westerly and south-westerly. The weather will be changeable and squally generally. Further scattered rain is likely in- all. westerly areas, with some heavy falls in Westland. A few isolated showers are likely in East Coast districts. The depression referred to yesterday has since last night become more intense, and has extended northward, while the anti-cyclone has remained practically stationary over the north Tasman Sea; consequently, winds have continued to be strong and of gale force in many places, the directions having been'chiefly westerly or southwesterly. Districts with a westerly aspect, and far northern and southern parts of the Dominion have had changeable conditions; and intermittent rain has occurred in eastern areas. The weather has been mainly fair to fine. By this morning, however, cloud had increased in most parts of the cotmtry. About Foveaux Strait conditions have been particularly boisterous, and this morning hail and snow showers were reported at places in that area. Auckland has continued to have a strong south-westerly to westerly wind, and the weather has been cloudy, with occasional showers. In Wellington a fresh, to strong north-westerly wind prevailed, but the weather yesterday was brilliantly fine and mild. There were 10.1 hours of sunshine. The north-westerly wind had become still stronger by this morning. The maximum 'gust was one of 55 miles per hour occurring at 8.10 a.m. It was fine and mild at Christchurch, with a strong north-west wind. The sky clouded over in the evening, and by this morning the wind had turned to a moderate south-westerly. Dunedin had a fine sunny day, with a fresh westerly wind' blowing. In the night the wind changed to southwesterly, and 8 points of rain has since fallen there. At 9 a.m. today a moderate gale from.the south-west was blowing, accompanied by rain.
