THE WEEK'S WORK
VEGETABLE GARDEN
Plant-cabbages and cauliflowers on well-manured ground. Avoid planting on plots occupied by similar crops last season. Cabbages - and-cauliflowers-which were planted early will respond to applications .of nitrate of soda which may be given prior to earthing up. Make ■• sowings as. recommended last week. Peas may; be, sown at intervals of two weeks to ensure a continuance, of supplies. To protect the young plants' from- birds stretch . 'black cotton along the rows. When digging over ground turn in all harmless weeds, as they .' improve the soil when rotted, but all; such weeds as docks, sorrel, - and. pouch grass should be forked out and burnt. ■Plant.;out autumn-sown onions on properly prepared beds. Most garden soils are improved by liberal supplies of lime. If agricultural lime is used, -it may be applied either a fortnight before or- after manuring. has been done.
