FOR THE ST. LEGER

BOBSLEIGH'S SUBSTITUTE

Lord Derby ■ has evidently got another good colt in Plassy, who won the St. George Stakes at Liverpool at the end of July. Unfortunately, the test was not complete, for, owing to the hard state, of the ground, several owners were afraid that their horses might jar themselves, and, even after having been sent to the meeting/ they were not allowed to run: . This was the reason for the absence of the Manton three-year-old Field Trial, who may play a prominent part in the St. Leger. - .. . It was only the' third- outing of Plassy and he still showed signs of greenness. But he is improving arapidly and the stable is hopeful" that he may even win the; St." Leger and com-' pensate' Lord Derby for the breakdown of Bobsleigh". The latter is still cbnfiried: to a paddock, and it is now very doubtful whether it will be possible, to get him ready to challenge Bahrain in the'final of the ; year's classics. '•'■.- : Plassy is not more than a long shot for the St. Leger at the present time, but so were :: Keysoe and Tranquil when they took the race for Lord Derby, who has also captured the race with Hyperion, so that it has been a lucky; one : for him. As indicated, Plassy :is still somewhat backward, and, however he fares ■at Doncaster. he will ;probably develop into one of the best four-year-olds next season. The hard state of the going at Liverpool brought:about the absence of several St. Leger colts, but Robin Goodfellow was a winner. Yet his prospects; may not be over-encourag-ing. . He had considerable difficulty in .giving Trade Wind 71b, and the form made it still more remarkable that the horse secured second place in the Derby. i : ■ r .
