ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
"Mentor."—Astarth was scratched for her engagement at the Pakuranga Meeting at 3.28 p.m. last Friday. "Fair Play" (Auckland).—Such horses are' always difficult to place on a mark until they have shown their potential ability in their new role, particularly when they change from high marks in open company to hack racing in another department while still producing good form. • These are cases in which, handicappers have a necessarily ■' wide range of discretion. An instance some seasons ago in . hurdle racing was that of the sprinter Consent, who was weighted 10.6 in an open hurdles at Marton at his'first appearance in the role, only lib less than Easteiv ly, a proved hurdler who had a short while previously won on both days at New Plymouth, the second time under 11.6; and despite this Consent was sent out favourite. Consent did not win, but he did at his next start over hurdles, the open Tongahoe Hurdles at Egmorft, when he carried 10.3 and scored easily by five lengths. You may make your own calculations for the difference between open and hack hurdles.
