WELLINGTONIAN'S SUCCESS

Mr. F. B. Shorland, M.Sc, of the Chemistry Laboratory of the Depart-1 ,_ment of Agriculture, Wellington, has ""obtained two years'; leave of absence in order to pursue research work at Liverpool University in accordance with the National Research Scholarship awarded him, and he will leave ' the; Dominion : • next month. This scholarship is awarded by the Council of Industrial and Scientific Research and provides for ■ the research work. to ' be done so as to be of special advantage to New Zealand. .. Arrangements have been made whereby Mr. Shorland will conduct his research under Professor Hilditch, of Liverpool, who is the Campbell Brown professor of oils, fats, and waxes. For the "past three, or four years Mr. Shorland has been working, on New Zealand fish'liver oils. With Mr. F. A. Denz,- late of Wellington, and now • studying medicine in London, Mr. , Shoriand showed - that such oils, are ■~ rich in .vitamins.: Since then he has • made a detailed study of the ling. .- At Liverpool University, Mr. Shor- . land will examine methodically all the ■ important fish liver oils, concerning .himself., particularly with nutritional - values and the composition of these oils. Ten scientific papers have been published by-the researcher since he cbm- • ' pletedi his Master of Science degree, and he has touched upon a number of . subjects dealing with agricultural and pure chemistry.' Lately he has been ■ giving special attention to the com- ■ ■ position of pampas grass. It is known now that pampas is richer in cellulose than the common lorage grasses, but ■ the nutritional values remain to be examined. ' Born in Wellington in 1909, Mr.. • Shorland was educated at Wellington - College and Victoria' College. In 1931 he won the Sir George Grey Scholarship, and next year graduated Master of Science with first honours in chemistry, winning the Jacob Joseph Scholarship, which provides for original. research work for one year.
