ON PAKURANGA FORM

PROSY BOY AND GAINSAY

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, August .27.

A few horses engaged at the EgmontWanganui Hunt Club's Meeting ;at New-Plymouth on Thursday raced at the gakuranga Hunt fixture at Ellerslie ' last-week, and on the showings they made at the northern "centre they should be prominent on this: occasion.

Redbray, who finished fifth in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. was certainly about half a furlong behind the win-' ncr of that* event, but for a racei like the Hunters': Trial Steeplechase: he should.be able to make a bold showing. .He was prominent for two miles in the race at Ellerslie and fenced well throughout the: contest., He is also in the Hunt Cup. but that is not easy' to win. , The Beechworth gelding who, is to race as Flockhart was not brought to Ellerslie, but. he would probably have been favourite for the Hunters' Steeples there had he started.

Landlubber is engaged in both hack sprint events on Thursday, and as he showed up in each of /his two starts last Saturday his chance is not altogether a hopeless one. He is not running up to expectations, however, and he will need to improve considerably to win a race like the Waverley Hack Handicap, with some good three-year-olds engaged. Landlubber is a good place prospect in the Whenuakura Hack Handicap, in which the class does not appear to be very,, formidable. . Prosy Boy promises to be a regular hot-pot in the Egntont-Wanganui Hunt Cup, for his winning effort last Saturday was a very .courageous one, and he had to beat a horse that, was improved as a result of a race earlier in the day, strange as it may seem, and a horse also that showed distinct promise at the Great Northern Meeting, Prosy Boy is likely to. be better suited by the "country" at New Plymouth [than he was at Ellerslie; in any case, ithat is the' conviction of his owner, and such being the case, a light rise of 31b for his good win last Saturday should not stop him on Thursday, despite the higher scale of weights. ' Miss Pango appeared to be well beaten when'she fell in the Pakuranga Hunt -Cup,' and now she meets Prosy Boy, on only, slb better terms. This would not bring them together were the race to be run again' at Ellerslie, but if the, fences on Thursday, are no more difficult than they were twelve months ago they may help an indifferent jumper like Miss Pango. Gainsay gave a splendid exhibition of galloping in the Bracelet'last week, and-it was obvious that he must have improved considerably, for on the way in which he won on Saturday he seems a cut above ..the usual standard of horse engaged in events for amateur riders. He was always going freely at Ellerslie, and he was hard held in front of his field all the way up the straight to score very easily. Sapless failed1 to make a show on Saturday, and with an allowance :of 61b for a beating to the extent of over a stone, when measured in mere avoirdupois, i he could have little show of beating Gainsay. .-.■•' ■..• ' ■..-. ■ :.■.•. |

So-based on their Pakuranga Hunt form,: it will be- surprising if Prosy Boy, Redbray, and Gainsay do not extend their winning record at New Plymouth. : It will be recalled that Flower Bag won the Pakuranga Hunt Cup last year, and then went on to win the Egmont-Wahganui Hunt Cup, a feat that Prosy Boy will endeavour 'to emulate. ..-■••'■■■-.-■• .-.•■'-. . : -~

Apart from Landlubber, Auckland stables will be represented: at NewPlymouth by Musquil and -the three-year-old Tonnerre. The, . former^ is engaged on the second day only, and while she is well/her efforts have been too of ten disappointing/to cause her to be recommended with confidence for any race. Tonnerre is a different proposition, and with only > 51b above the minimum in a hack sprmt he should be a wonderful prospect. This three-year-old claims classic engagements this spring, and his showing at New Plymouth' may indicate how good he is; he should win on the trip.
