ICE-CREAM BY AIR
Five gallons of ice cream, packed in a refrigerating chemical, was a rare treat to thirtyvfive Americans living on the. two sandy islets of Midway atoll, in a coral-locked mid-Pacific lagoon. . Recently this delivery came 1254 miles from Pearl Harbour, near Honolulu, •in 9 hours 13 minutes. It was flown to the second station on the projected transpacific air route to the Far East by Pan-American Airways' four-motored clipper aeroplane, which carried acrew of five and two passengers. The'flight followed the "on schedule" precedent established in the giant amphibian's pioneering trips to Hawaii from Alameda, California.
