FORESTRY LEAGUE

SUPPORT FOR BEAUTIFYING

. At the last monthly meeting of the New Zealand Forestry League, presided over by Mi. A. Leigh Hunt,-.a request was received from the Wellington Beautifying Society for the league to appoint a representative. This was held over for further consideration, but-the society is to be assured of the league's co-oj?eration in its laudable efforts to beautify the city'and surroundings. -: '. ' ~ ' . ' A reply-to thejeague's request that trees be planted in Karori Cemetery lor shelter and beautification was received from the City ■ Council, indicating that more trees would be planted this year. It was also mentioned, in -the. letter that a fine Norfolk pine had been deliberately barked in Bolton Street Cemetery.

'-' The ' Woodville' Borough Council wrote' in,-respect to decorations .with native, shrubbery,, agreeing to the league's request for its.co-operation in preventing the use of native shrubbery for such a purpose.' ■ In1 response to the league's representation for special legislation to prevent the promiscuousl cutting of timber under miners' rights) the' Commissioner of State Forests stated that consideration was being given to the question of taking suitable action to meet the position. ' The U.S.A. Department" of Agriculture, replying to the league's inquiry regarding the destruction of animals in the forest by means of poisoned licks, stated that poisoning was not, looked upon with favour in that country. Excellent -results had been obtained by regulating the bag limit, numbers of hunters, etc., on overstocked areas.

A request for support to its representations was received from the, Mount Holdsworth Club, the aim being to declare some 7000 acres of the mountain forest a scenic reserve.' It was thought that as this was already a protection forest under the control of the State Forest Service the area was in safe hands. Further inquiries into the question will be made.
