TROUBLESOME SAND

(Siiecia! to tlio "Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day. One of the major problems that the Foxton Harbour Board has to contend with is the sand which is blown into the Manawatu River and blocks the navigable channel. At yesterday's meeting of the board, tree-planting on the dunes was urged as a preventive measure, the use of relief labour for the work being suggested. Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., approved Of the work but said he felt it was not necessarily a work' for unemployed. The Government had its responsibilities in the matter and his own view was that the time had arrived to pay a fair rate of wages. He moved that a deputation should wait on the Minister of Marine to see whether men could be put on the work at a reasonable rate of pay, and the board agreed.
