AUSTRALIAN SEAMEN
TERMS OF SETTLEMENT
COMMUNIST ACTIVITY
ICnitcil I'vess Association—By Electric-Tele-j graph—Copyright. SYDNEY, August .25. Fifteen hundred men attended yesterday's mass meeting of seamen, and a decision by an overwhelming majority to accept the owners' terms was received with cSeers. The terms offered were that, subject! 'It the union and its members declaring the strike off and offering for all ships in terms of the existing agreement between the shipowners and the union, all owners would instruct pick-ing-up officers to select suitable men for immediate manning of ships, whether they had very good, good, or indifferent discharges arising out of the present trouble, and that they be selected without discrimination. The Acting Federal Attorney-Gen-eral, Senator T. C. Brennan, in a message from Melbourne, said that the Government was gratified that the strike was over. There was a minority of Communists among the seamen, and proof existed that they had been very active on this occasion. "No doubt we owe a great deal to the wives of the seamen, whose influence was almost certainly on the side of common sense," he said. .. . " i The Wanganella and Ngakuta sailed last night, the Wanganella for Auckland and Wellington. It is estimated that the owners' losses in the strike totalled £30,000, while the seamen's loss in wages amounts to several thousand pounds. Full activity has been restored on the waterfront. " "■■ .
