LEADERSHIP AND A PLAN
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Your recent article on "Bud- '. i ding Parties and Plans" stated that "Leadership is the need of the hour." This applies not' only to, the whole ' world, but very particularly to those of us who are in New Zealand and desire' something better, especially for the weaker ones. A leader without an active army behind him is much on the same footing as a leader without ideas, as all are essential to ensure success. Kindly permit me to make a few suggestions for the benefit of those who are interested in the welfare of the nation above their own interests as a first responsibility. Before there can be leadership the conditions must be such that the people earnestly desire a change for something better. They must not only be able to formulate some rough idea of exactly what they want but also be ready as a community of men to supply whatever goods, services, and materials are required for the complete attainment of the common objective in the best manner possible. After having secured a consensus of opinion of the thing to be actually done* then a man in the nature of an architect grasps the ideas of his friends, prepares his plans' accordingly (subject to such further modifications as may be . requested), and the work is put in hand when everything is ready, and. carried out to completion in every detail. New Zealand is specially adapted by locality and environment for the perfection of a new scheme of ideas based on right lir,es, as there are land, capital, goods, and labour in abundance, and even men with ideas to carry out the plan when the need arises. Until the people as a whole are ready to act decisively for a great and inspiring ideal, the plan and the leader must remain in abeyance, although : petty leaders may come and go in the, meantime. The first; thing to do is to determine that which is right for one and all; for it is v only by doing tight that peace can come. —I am, etc., ■ -: .
