MAORIS DISAPPOINT
MATCH AT AUCKLAND
WIN BY FOUR POINTS
(By Telegraph—-i'ress Association.)
AUCKLAND, August 25.
In a lather disappointing match, at Eden Park yesterday the Maoris beat Auckland by '14 points to 10. The weather was ideal for football and the attendance was 20,000. In spite of their fine reputation the Maori team did not show the standard anticipated. They took risks, in plenty, but their passing- was erratic and' too much of the balloon type. The Auckland forwards played well and were quick to take advantage of the mistakes of the opposition. The Auckland vanguard packed better, thus being able to break through the line^outs and rucks. Against quick packing forwards who would give full weight there would have been a different aspect to the game. Auckland was a totally different side from that which lost the Ranfurly Shield to Canterbury a fortnight ago. The backs combined better while on defence, and they would not be recognised as the same team, the new line, until Kiljeen retired injured, showing to: advantage. Killeen's injury a minute after half-time probably cost Auckland the game...Nepia also retired in the second half, but during his stay on the field he showed some brilliant touches. C. Smith, making his own chances, impressed with his strong running, while G. Harrison and Broderick were outstanding in the forwards. The best back for the Maoris, was H. Harrison, first five-eighth, who was brilliant at times cm attack. ' .'. Possession from-the scrums' and lirieouts was fairly eyen. Auckland, especially in the first spell, adopted' spoiling tactics which -were responsible to a large extent for. stopping tlie open play of the visitors. ■ ' ' :- The Maoris led" at half-time, 6 to nil. but injuries on both sides in the second half upset the combination: Tries for the Maoris were scored' by P.' Rogers (2) and by P. Smith. H. Harrison converted one try arid, kicked a s penalty goal. For: Auckland. rAndersqn arid Dick scored tries, - Neale converting
