SHIELD PLATEKS
AN INDIFFERENT GAME
The trial match between the trainees who are to challenge for the shield and "The Rest," which was played at Karori Park on Saturday, proved an indifferent game, the shield trainees dominating the play. There was some good stickwork and some excellent combination at- times, but the play was too one-sided to impress the onlookers. The game was fast and open from the word go, both sides being weak in ball control in ' the opening stages. The ground was dry and fast and obviously deceived some of the players, but they soon settled down with the shield team attacking. "The Rest1' broke away down the left wing, but sticks in the Shield circle relieved to midfield. After some brief exchanges the Shield team broke through, and Browne got in a high shot to the net and opened the scoring for the Shield men. "The Rest" attacked, but Larnoch held on too long and the ball went back to his own circle, where a corner led to a twenty-five bully. Sticks near the circle gave the Shield players a chance, but Simpson kicked clear. Some good passing, in Shield territory led 'to a rush into the circle, but Moore cleared with a good kick. "The Rest" kept up pressure and Moore yielded a corner, but the ball was cleared for a spell of midfield play. A corner followed at the other end, but the ball. was sent right across, and The Rest" went up, only to be sent back for off-side play. The Shield team went right down and Ferguson got a good shot past Simpson, who had just stopped the ball. Open play followed, and then some bad speculating on the part of the backs let Ferguson through, and, following up fast, he found the goal after Bremner, who had replaced Simpson had missed with his kick. The Shield players attacked again, and Bremner came well out to clear. He fumbled his kick once more, and Browne shot past him into the net.."The Rest" attacked, but were overeager, and sticks in the circle let the Shield players right away. Wheatley went well down and centred for Ferguson to snap the fifth shot into the net. -..••••■ After a--period of open play "The Rest had a good chance at goal, but Moore kicked clear. He saved with a good kick later, but the pressure was maintained, find'he cairn out to clear. He failed, and when the ball went back, Mason, who had fallen back, kicked the ball out over the attackers' heads. Burton took the penalty bully and won, making the score 5-1 in favour of the Shield trainees at half-time. Play in the early - stages of the second spell was very, open, and then The Rest" attacked for a time and forced two corners. From the second the trainees went right down the field, and. the ball was sent across the circle to Larnoch, who. returned for Wheat?J° get in a Sood shot to the corner of the net. The ball had previously been accidentally kicked towards the circle, and the defenders were expecting a penalty, but the shot was allowed. Watchman netted another a few mintues later after a brisk attack. ; "The Rest" were giving an indifferent display at this stage, and Ferguson initiated a movement that resulted in the trainees' ninth goal. He passed in to Wheatley, who tossed the ball across, for Watchman to shoot from close-;-in; Watchman added the tenth trqm a pass from Larnoch, the ball being rolled between the posts. To the tune of loud cheers, McDonald made a good run and finished it off by finding the net, but Watchman nulliflea his effort a few minutes later by putting a hot shot into the opposite «TAfte£ s<?F,f open Play Cooper brought ±ne Rest s score to four with a good T hr OaLee?fl.% e n e e. e 4nded: Shield Mr. W.
