SENIOR A DIVISION
WATERSIDE WIN WELL
Waterside definitely asserted their superiority .over Diajnond in the senior A championship match at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Playing impressive football they ran out the winners by 8-3, and always seemed to have something in reserve. Notwithstanding the fact that they were opposed to an extremely experienced and finished team, it was considered that Diamond would have put up a' better performance. Their failure can be attributed in some measure to staleness, and also to the hard gruelling they experienced in the first spell fighting against a strong northerly gale which—unfortunately for them— died down in the second half. However, to them must.go the honour of scoring the most spectacular goal of the whole match—their only score in the first spell in the teeth of the wind being a real gem. ■ The following were the teams:— Waterside. (White): Cummings; Goggin, Hazel; McLelland, Cocks, Stone; Wilson, Thompson, Janes, Longbottom, McGrath. ... : Diamond (Black): .Ewing; Hopper, ;Killick; O'Eeary, Geddes, Nichol; i O'Connor, Dyer,, Tucker, Gilchrist, jUpchurch. . . ■.'. Waterside were successful with the toss, and Diamond. !put the ball in motion. Setting up a smart attack on the Whites'citadel they were awarded two corners in rapid succession which proved abortive.;; .In midiield Cocks seized an opening and sent Thompson, Janes, and Wilson away in a pretty •movement, the winger shooting hard into goal, but Ewing relieved with a kick to half-way. Back came the Whites down the .left-wing, McGrath being prominent in association with Longbottom, but the latter terminated the assault by shooting weakly. Seconds later McGrath shot from the corner, the ball grazing the crossbar. Diamond at this juncture were putting up a great defence, Geddes, Hopper and Ewing being particularly noticeable. For an infringement Waterside were awarded a free kick. Cocks took the kick, placing the ball well into the goal-mouth, and Hopper unfortunately headed the ball into his own goal. Waterside 1, Diamond 0. Seconds only had elapsed from the restart and the Whites had scored again, Longbottom piloting the ball into the net from a pass by McLelland. Waterside 2, Diamond 0. From the centre kick the Blacks' left wing- were seen in a dazzling dribble.
but the attack brought no fruition, Tucker kicking behind. From the kicK-out Stone parted to McGrath, to Janes, to Cocks, for the last-named player to beat Ewing with a high shot. Waterside 3, Diamond 0. The recommencement saw Geddes pave the way for a centre attack, and Upchurch was unfortunate m not scoring, the goalkeeper saving splendidly. Seconds later Nichol, Gilcnrist, and Upchurch were associated in another left-flank assault, which Tucker finalised by shooting into the back of the net just on the call of half-time. Waterside 3, Diamond 1. Waterside started proceedings in the second half, but the Blacks took the initiative. From midfield O'Leary slipped the ball to Dyer, who travelled well into the Whites' goal area and then parted to Tucker, who made no mistake with his drive. Waterside 3, Diamond 2. r Spurred by this reverse the Whites' left-wing were noticeable for nippy work, one shot from McGrath missing by inches only. Back again in the Blacks' goal area the Whites were awarded a penalty kick. McLelland made no mistake with his effort. Waterside 4, Diamond 2. The Whites' right-wing were seen in a- strong attack from the restart, Ewing conceding a corner. The kick was well placed by McGrath, and Janes had no difficulty in heading into goal. Waterside 5, Diamond 2. Undeterred by this reverse Diamond came away with a fine rush. In a likely position they were awarded a free: kick.'■Nichol placed well' to O'Leary, who scored. Waterside 5, Diamond 3. From now on Waterside were definitely masters of the situation, adding three more goals per medium of Thompson, McLelland, and Janes, thus making the final score: Waterside 8, Diamond 3.
Mr, V. Wheeler was the referee.
