VOSSELER SHIELD
TEN-MILE EVENT
PROMISING RUNNERS
Competition was keen in the Vosseler Shield ten-mile race last Saturday. Despite the fact that the Scottish harriers held good positions throughout the race, the other clubs were always within challenging distance, and the margin of points between: the next three clubs was very small. In the early stages of the race, speculation was rife as to which of the leaders would finally take the honours. The winner, A. G. Bagnall, ran a very well-judged race and was not bustled when V. Tunbridge established a break of about 50yds at the end of the first round. Had Tunbridge kept with the pacers instead of forcing a lead, he would probably have been able to challenge Bagnall at the finish, ' The Presbyterian harriers, who were entered in the ten-mile race for the first time, made a good showing, and, with more experience in inter-club competition, would make a formidable team in the longer distance races. A. Congalton made a gallant attempt to keep with the leaders, but lacked the stamina to hold his position over the latter stages of the race. The Brooklyn harriers felt the loss of G. Prosser, who started in the race but had to withdraw owing to ]his injured feet giving him trouble. D. Pederson and A. Barclay held good positions but were not so far to the fore as usual. The placing in last Saturday's tenmile race bring before club officials the importance of training the young runners to take an interest in team racing for their club. Although there were quite a number of veteran runners in the race, -their finishing times were not so fast as in previous years, and some of them were probably competing, in the race for the last time. However, their influence upon the | members of mediocre class is very necessary, especially, in the weaker clubs which'require' a number of runners capable of finishing in good places to bring down their points.
