IN THE MANAWATU
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Further heavy rain fell overnight on the saturated' countryside and caused many, slips in the hill country. The Manawatu Gorge is still blocked and strenuous efforts are being made to keep the alternative route via the Pahiatua Track open though the rainfall has created a bad condition.
A wash-out on the Fitzherbert Hill Road has endangered one of the pipes carrying the city's water supply from the reservoir. '
Rivers and streams are rising and farm lands are sodden with water,
causing expectations of mortality among newly-born lambs. Sports fixtures have been cancelled. Steady rain continues.
