DEATH ON. HONEYMOON

A specially chartered tender went at full speed up the River Lee from Queenstown to Cork recently in an unsuccessful attempt .to save a liner passenger's life. : The passenger, Mr.1 Franklin W. Hobbs, a prominent young stockbroker, of Boston, United States, set. out with his bride from New York on a honeymoon tour of Europe, in the President Roosevelt. Nearing Ireland he was taken ill with acute appendi-1 citis. An immediate operation was necessary, and Dr. John Martin, the ship's surgeon, assisted .by several doctor passengers, performed it successfully. Later, however,. Mr! Hobbs had. a relapse, and it was decided that he' must be landed at the first opportunity. A wireless message to Queenstown asked that a tender should be ready to make the transfer. So serious was his condition when Queenstown was reached that a road journey to Cork was considered inadvisable, and the tender carrying Mr. and Mrs Hobbs, Dr. Martin, and the ship's nurse did the 14 miles by river.- Mr. Hobbs, however, died in hospital shortly after admission.
