With the Ranfurly Shield in their' possession, Canterbury's Rugby repre- . sentatives completed their northern tour with a match:against Wellington's elect at Athletic Park this afternoon, and they leave tonight for Christchurch, there to meet such challenges as are ■ accepted. Possession of the shield was/ not in dispute this afternoon. The storm overnight, with • its downpours; "of rain and'hail, "and more rainfall this morning, made the outlook for the match most unpromising, but there was a fine break early this afternoon,'.and this improved the prospects, though the ground was heavy from the' drenching that ir-had received. All other - Rugby football matches were called off, and, a curtainraiser which had been' arranged for . the Canterbury-Wellington contest having been transferee delsewhere, this •meant that the ground was not disturbed before the provincial representatives took the .field. The curtainraiser, along with the. other lower grade matches, \ colleges >y. clubs, had been transferred, to.-Lyall Bay before the announcement that "the city reserves were not Available for play. \ On account of received in their previous engagements on the northern tour, Canterbury .were unable to field a thoroughly, fit fifteen for to- • day's match, .;_ Thirteen of the players were sound enough,', but the services of , two of those with minor injuries had' to be called, upon to complete the team.
