THIEVES FRUSTRATED

STRONGROOM DOOR JAMS

(By Teleßi-aph.-Press Association.)

' NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. An attempt to blow open the strongroom of the Farmers' Co-operative Society at New, Plymouth was made during the weekend. The lock was shattered with gelignite, but the explosion jammed the door so tightly that a day's work with an oxy-acetylenc cutter was required to open it. Tha thieves secured only a pound in cash from a drawer, but may have taken groceries from the store. Entrance was gained to a cellar through a window, and a double-locked door was broken open to the main floor, where the strongroom was situated. It is believed two charges were used, and a neighbour remembers hearing two muffled explosions on Sunday afternoon. •
