OTAGO CONTESTS

PARTIES' INTENTIONS

THE DUNEDIN SEATS

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to the "Evening Post."}

DUNEDIN, This Day.

I With Labour the only party so far !to have announced its candidates for the Otago seats, a good deal of speculation is toeing indulged in regarding the intentions of-other parties. Both the Nationalist and Democrat Parties are at present reticent about their plans. The Democrats intend to make a triangular contest for the Clutha seat, for which the Rev. E. T* Cox (Labour) and Mr. Roy (Nationalist) are already in the field. Mr. J. W. Munro, sitting member for Dunedin North, is expected to have opposition from the Nationalists as well as the Democrats. Mrs. R. S. Black has been chosen as the Democrat nominee and Mr. S. Falconer's name has been mentioned as being most suitable for the Nationalist nomination. He recently rejected-nomina-tion by the Democrats. If the present Nationalist intentions are carried out, there will be a surprise candidate for Dunedin South. The seat is at present held by Mr. Fred Jones. The name of Mr. T. K. S. Sidey has been suggested in Government circles. He is the only son of the late Sir Thomas Sidey, who held the seat for so many years, and is a barrister.

The retirement of the Speaker (Sir Charles Statham) will mean that all parties will contest the Dunedin Central seat. The candidates definitely in the field are Mr. Peter Neilson (Labour) and Mr. Alfred Clark (Democrat), and the Nationalists have selected Mr. W. H. Shepherd, a member of the Dunedin City Council.

For the Dunedin West seat the Hon. W. Downie Stewart (Nationalist) and Dr. D. G. McMillan (Labour) are announced as candidates, and it is. certain the Democrats will also have a nominee.

Mr. A. E. Ansell (Nationalist) will be opposed for the Chalmers seat by Mr. A. Campbell. (Labour), and there will probably be a triangular contest in this electorate, too.
