LONDON, July 30.
As was anticipated yesterday, the fourth cricket Test between England and.South Africa at Old' Trafford, Manchester, ended in a draw. England's second innings was declared closed after the luncheon adjournment today, when the score was 231 for six wickets, and South Africa scored 169 for two wickets before the match ended.
When play was resumed this morning England had 43 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket,, the batsmen being Bakewell and Barber, both of whom had scored 21. They opened steadily against accurate bowling until Bakewell. was beaten by a splendid ball from Langton which broke back. He had scored 54 runs.
Hammond, who filled the vacancy, took 35 minutes tci score 12 runs. Leyland, however, batted aggressively with of! drives and hits to leg. Apparently the public considered a draw inevitable and the attendance was only 8000 at the luncheon adjournment. FORCING THE PACE. After the resumption of play in the afternoon Wyatt and Hammond forced the pace and the latter was unbeaten with a score of 63 when the closure was applied. T:\ most successful South African bowicr was Vincent, who bowled two and a half hours and took four wickets for 78 runs. The South Africans, seeing no chance of winning, batted with the utmost caution. The dull play, which was relieved by occasional boundaries from Rowan's bat, caused mild barracking, directed chiefly at Mitchell, who carried his bat after a patient innings for 48.
