TELEPHONE RENTALS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Many will agree with your correspondent "XYZ" as to the high rental charged for residential telephones. The Department extensively advertises its many advantages and the low cost of tolls and yet charges a rental which debars many availing themselves of this modern necessity. During the depression I, of necessity, arranged to pay monthly instead of half-yearly, and for this concession the Department imposed a penally of 5 per cent, extra. Also, instead of having installed a small, unsuitable wall telephone I requested a movable instrument, and afterwards found that I was paying an extra 10s per annum for the privilege. I suppose the extra 10s, paid for some year?, has paid for this instrument twice over. Why these extra charges? The same Department charges no extra penalty for radio licences paid quarterly instead of yearly. The aim of the Department should be to popularise the telephone service so far as residential connections are concerned by reducing the present high rental and dispensing with unnecessary extra charges.—l am, etc., PHONER.
