U.S. BID FOR THE DAVIS CUP

The concluding singles matches in \the inter-zone final of the Davis Cup between the United States and Germany were played yesterday at Winibledon, and by winning both the Americans gain the right to challenge the holders of the Cup— Britain—in the decisive 'last round. The Americans had to fight hard for their victory over Germany. In the first pair of singles Budge (U.S.) defeated Henkel (Germany) 7-5, 11-9, 6-8, 6-1, but the German champion, yon Cramm, the second ranking player in the world, had no difficulty with Allison. The doubles, between Allison and Van Ryn (U.S.) and yon Cramm and Lund (Germany), ran to five strenuous sets, three of them deuce. Yesterday Allison accounted for Henkel in three sets, two of them deuce, and Budge had his revenge over yon Cramm for his- defeat .in the Wimbledon Tournament.

It looks, after this victory over Germany, as if America's challenge to Britain will Be more formidable this year than it was last,- when, after defeating Australia through the medium of the doubles, the Americans lost all their' singles in the final with Britain, but again won iFie doubles. This year the redoubtable American doubles pair, Lott and Stoefen, are no longer available,.having yielded to the lure of professionalism, but Allison and Van Ryn are little inferior and may be trusted to account for the English pair, Hughes and Tuckey. This throws the responsibility, on the singles players—Perry and Austin— of winning at least three out of the four singles matches, if the Cup is to be retained by Britain. In the face of Perry's form against Crawford at their last meeting and Budge's improved showing against the Germans, the prospects of the struggle between these two are decidedly interesting and the match will be eagerly awaited by an expectant tennis l world. j
