A GIRL'S FRIGHT
STREET APPARITION
The story of a girl's terror at seeing an "apparition" under, a street lamp was told at Lincoln Police Court when Arthur Barlow, 27, was charged with stealing woman's clothing, says the "Daily Telegraph." Mr. W. S. Hughes, the Chief Constable, said that shortly after midnight a girl was returning from a late dance when she saw a figure in white standing under a street lamp. As she approached, the figure, extending at arm's length the white garment which was being worn, started bowing towards her.
"She thought it was a ghost and was afraid. When she was seen by the police shortly afterwards she was in a state of absolute terror. The police suspected that the 'apparition' was Barlow and they later found that was so."
The Chief Constable added that for some time Barlow had been a source of annoyance to women-in the town. He had a mania for appearing in quite public places from time to time dressed in female clothes and by his peculiar behaviour frightening women and girls.
Detective-Inspector Birkin read a statement alleged to have been made by Barlow in which he said he had only borrowed the clothes. At times, Barlow was alleged to have said, he had no control over himself and then he felt he must dress up as a woman. "I sit in the house knitting," the statement added, "and I love women's work, such as washing-up and cleaning floors.". ■ ' ■
The officer said that while he was at the house Barlow dressed up in a women's black dance frock and sat knitting socks.
When.asked if he had any objection .-to a remand for medical examination, Barlow said, "It would be safer. It "is at night that I'suffer most when If-am. alone." : •-.'*•"■ "?<^v • :; v
