SOME SURPRISES
SATURDAY'S GAMES
REPRESENTATIVE FOURTHS
Saturday's matches in the senior A grade of the Wellington Basketball Association's competitions provided some surprises. Wesley and Awatea drew —8-all—after an exciting natch. Kia Toa registered a surprise defeat of Kia Ora, and although the leaders in the competition, Wellington East Old Girls, had a comfortable win on points over Technical College Old Girls, the latter put up a surprisingly good fight and the final score did not give a true indication of the relative play of the two teams. Wesley 8, Awatea B.—Awatea put up a great fight in their match against Wesley and although they were one goal' down at half-time, by a splendid effort in the second half they managed to draw level with their opponents before the conclusion of the game. Play, taken as a whole, was very even throughout. Awatea's defence gave a great exhibition and provided Wesley's forwards with a difficult task in getting the ball near the goal, while Wesley's difficulties were further increased by the loss of their defender, E. Sharp, • who was forced to retire through injury during the latter part of the second spell. Kia Toa 21, Kia Ora 19.—Kia Toa have been showing marked improvement each week, and the results of their practising against the representative team ' are becoming more and more evident. In a high-scoring game they decisively defeated Kia Ora on Saturday, despite the fact that in the first half one of thsir defenders sustained an injury to the ankle and was replaced by an emergency. At half-time the score was 9-all, but in the second spell they secured a margin of two goals and emerged with a welldeserved victory. Kia. Ora's defence were a trifle weak on the day, but M. Simmons played exceptionally well for the losers. Wellington East 16, Technical College Old Girls 4.—Although there was a margin of twelve goals in Wellington East's favour at the conclusion of the match, the leaders of the competition were fully extended by Technical Old Girls throughout the game. Right at the-commencement Technical broke through East's defence and drew first blood. The half-time score was 8-3 in Wellington East's favour, but throughout the second half they had to 'fight hard to retain possession 'of the ball and score. Technical played a hard, steady game which, if kept up, would stand them in good stead in the future. University 19, Furlor 13.—Furlor put up quite a good showing in their game against University on Saturday, although they were handicapped by the absence of one of their senior players whose place was taken by an emergency. The game was fairly even throughout and at times the high scoring on both sides, was very spectacular.;. .... ;.„ .ii ■ ;,.. • .■..■'■'' ' . EXECUTIVE ..MEETING. .;/. At a meeting of the executive of the Wellington Basketball Association on Monday night the following captains and vice-captains of the various representative teams were appointed:— Senior A, J. Mitchell (captain), E. McGurk (vice-captain); senior B, K. Blatch (captain), E.McCallam (vicecaptain); third grade, J. Clark (captain) ,J. Roberts (vice-captain); fourth grade, A. Newton (captain), I. Moller (vice-captain). . The executive decided that the sale of sweets, etc., at Mount .Cook School grounds on Saturdays in aid of the billeting fund should be continued. ' It was also decided that in grades where the completion "of the second round is not possible, sections will be divided into first and second groups. [On the other hand, where group games have, been completed, it was decided to play as many postponed games as possible this week. . It .was reported that difficulty was still being experienced in the matter of, securing the necessary offers for billeting in connection with the forthcoming New Zealand tournament in Wellington, and it was decided to request referees to approach players personally on the subject. The necessity for captains of teams notifying referees of injuries to players while the team is on the field was again stressed, and it was resolved once more to draw the attention of clubs to the .rule governing the subject. . FOURTft GRADE REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. The representative fourth; grade team is under training with Miss Madson as coach, and there is; some promising material among these players. Forwards: I. Pownall (McKenzies) is a reliable player, but could move into position much more quickly than she does; A. Newton (Victoria) shows good positional play and shoots accurately; P. Pike (Teaspur) is quick, but erratic, and is already showing improvement through practice; N. Rice (Johnsonville Methodist) is a steady player, 'but also could be speedier. Centres: M. Watson (Queen Margaret Old Girls) makes good openings in centre, but is inclined to lose sight of the ball when it is nearly in her possession; she should keep her eyes on the ball more; N. Paris (St. Joseph's) opens up play well in the centre, but loses possession often through over-eagerness and excitability; V. Josephs (Stylecraft) is always ready, and catches and passes well; J. Simpson (Melrose ( should avoid over-defence —she is quick at getting into position and very speedy in passing. Defence: P. Bryan (Empire Box) would improve her game if she did not throw wildly and hastily; she is excellent at getting possession, but her side too often loses possession by her hastiness in passing; M. Purdy (Poneke) is a strong defence, intercepting and anticipating well; I. Moller (Rawleighs) is a steady defence, and follows up play throughout; E. Gooch (Soma) plays a fast game, but does not handle the'ball as well as she might. Altogether this junior representative i team shows great promise, and their mistakes are those made through lack of experience. Practice in simple passing, in throwing the ball, and learning how to catch it cleanly would improve their play tremendously. By the time their fixture is due, the side should be a strong one. TAWARIKI SUB-ASSOCIATION. ■• This scattered group of teams continues to progress, despite the difficulties caused by expensive travelling and the absence of practice facilities. On Saturday the eight teams met at Plimmerton and a further round of championship games was played, the results being: Kotara (Plimmerton) 13, Huia A (Porirua) 11; Raven (Tawa Flat) 11, Kuku (Paekakaviki) 9; Tares (Plimmerton) 13, Kea (Porirua) 0;
Huia B (Porirua) 12, Kaka (Paekakariki) 7. The referees were Mr. C. W. Dallaston and Miss M. E. Armstrong, president of the Wellington Basketball Association. Considering the fact that the teams meet only for their weekly matches, the standard, of play is good, and there are several players of outstanding merit who should form a sound background for the team which will play against Hutt Valley Sub-association in Wellington on August 17. NEW REFEREES' ASSOCIATION. A meeting of those interested in refereeing was held recently at Plimmerton. Mr. C. W. Dallaston presided, and there were also present 'Misses M. E. Armstrong (Wellington), Edginton and Dallaston (Plimmerton), and Early (Paekakariki), and Messrs. Hassall and' Johnson (Porirua). It was pointed out that owing to the difficulty of obtaining the services ofreferees elsewhere it had been neces^ sac for most of the games to 'be played at Plimmerton. Messrs. Hassall and Johnson agreed to take charge of the games at Porirua and Tawa Flat. It was decided to get in touch with others interested and to form a Tawariki Basketball Referees' Association. A discussion regarding rules and interpretations took place, and a vote of thanks was passed to Miss Armstrong for her assistance and advice. REPRESENTATIVE PRACTICES.
