PROTEAS
EVERGREEN SHRUBS
Proteas are South African shrubs, growing on an average to Bft high. There are many varieties which produce beautiful flowers freely. The flowers are borne on the tip of the young wood, and the plants should be cut back fairly hard after flowering to encourage bushy growth and prevent ' them becoming straggly. Proteas are not particular as to soil, growing well on poor clay hillsides or in sandy soil. They are particularly useful for seaside gardens, as, they do not surfer any harm from salt breezes. The flowering season lasts for about four months. When used as cut flowers the water in the vases should be renewed every second day and the stalks should be wiped before replacing them.
