PERILOUS SEA VOYAGE

IN WOODEN BATH TUB

FEARS FOR DESERTER FROM BARQUE

MELBOURNE, July 14,

A message received from Thursday Island states that Bertie Hjelstrom, a 21-year-old apprentice who deserted from the barque C. B. Pedersen, is bobbing about somewhere in Torres Strait in an old wooden bath tub with an improvised sail, on his way to New Guinea—at least it is hoped he is,'because when he left on Wednesday night heavy seas were coming up, and the crew of the C. B. Pedersen fear for his safety.

Hjelstrom, who was lured away by tales of gold to be won at New Guinea, 50 miles away, took only a small supply of water, food, and clothes.
