TROUBLE AT FOXTON

SILTING OF CHANNEL

MOTOR VESSEL GROUNDS

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day.

Shipping at Foxton has been having a bad time lately following serious silting of the lower reaches of the Manawatu River, caused by the recent series of floods. On .Tuesday afternoon, the Huanui, laden with coal, 'grounded at what is known as Rush Flat. Several times the vessel was set astern, but failed to clear the obstruction. In the meantime, the Foxton arrived off the bar laden with produce, and was forced to remain outside. Soundings were taken on Wednesday, but all efforts to"find.a channel over the flats failed. The Foxton, however, ventured in, and after dragging her way over the bar and grounding twice on the journey up the river, reached the wharf.

Lightering operations were carried out on the Huanui on Thursday, when 25 tons of coal were removed from the after end on to punts. In the evening the vessel managed to get clear, and continued up.to the wharf. ■

'Both boats were able to proceed to sea again after discharging their cargoes,' but unless an early improvement is effected in the river channel, further delays will be experienced.
