THE HACK HUBDLERS
HUNTING JAY WINS WELL
Though making only his second appearance over the fences, Hunting Jay was backed down to favouritism for the Vittoria Hack Hurdles, and he duly succeeded after leading with a good margin from after the first obstacle. Placed on the outside of the line' he raced to the van with a fast run after crossing the initial jump, and after beating .off Salt Spray before reaching the last fence he easily withstood a later challenge from Swift arid Sure by a couple of lengths. Hunting Jay came under notice with his promising debut at Napier Park last month, when he finished a'close third and his running was afterwards questioned, resulting in the suspension of his rider. He was a fast horse on the flat, but his waywardness at the barrier finally forced<his owner (Mr. C. Hart) to conVert him to jumping, and he was handed to L. Knapp, who now has charge of his preparation. He is another of the' Hunting Songs, who have a great record of success at Trentham. ! •
Swift and Sure improved throughout the running, jumping well, and although he did not menace the winner ho easily beat Salt Spray for second money. He is another comparative novice at ,the game,, but he had started in the role three times previously and last week finished third over the battens at Dannevirke.
Salt Spray had every chance, but after appearing to hook a couple of fences he did not finish on quite so well as it was thought he might, though the race is likely to have benefited him. He may not race again now till Riccarton. Adult made up a lot of ground over the closing stages and was only a length back fourth. The rest, headed by Master Musk (running on), Prince Val, the tiring Imasurvey, and Bright Sky, were a .dozen lengths further back, with Semper Paratus last all the way. Kia Tina was one of the vanguard till she hit the fence at the seven furlongs hard and was pulled -up. • ■ ' . ■~-.-. ;
