POSTAL DISTRICTS
AID TO LETTER SORTING
The division of the various cities of the Dominion into postal districts, such as E5, N2, and so on, greatly facilitates the mail sorters' iwork, but naturally only when the public in addressing their letters place these letters and numbers on the envelope. ; For instance, a mail leaving Wellington for Auckland can be expeditiously sorted into districts before it even starts, provided that the letters are fully addressed with postal district added, and quick delivery "in such a case is a natural corollary.
A Post Office: official informed a "Post" representative that, on the whole, the public had responded fairly well to the request to add, wherever possible, letters and figures denoting postal districts to;.the addresses of their correspondence. The practice, however, -was n6t as-'yetl as widespread as it is hoped that it will become, and it was pointed but '.that it is in correspondents' own interests to utilise this form of address'as much as possible. Such a; system of addressing letters has long been the practice in London and elsewhere,'but it is still somewhat- of a •novelty to New Zealanders,. and it is recognised that it takes time to, make such a system a kind of second nature. The P. and T; Department,;however, lives in hope.
