ARBOR DAY ARSANGEMENTS

» (Special to the "Evening Post.") NELSON, July 9. The Nelson Arbor Day Committee is organising an extensive programme of tree-planting for August 7. The celebration of the day will commence with a suitable public gathering at the church steps, following which the school children and any residents interested will undertake the planting of trees and shrubs in various parts of the town. At the annual meeting of the committee the Mayor, Mr.'G. L, Page, expressed . the City Council's appreciation of the work accomplished by the committee in the past year, and hoped that the committee's programme, which includes the planting of pohutukawas on- Haulashore Island, would be attended by success. Mr. S. H. Moynagh was re-elected chairman of the committee.

Last year the Nelson Rugby Union organised a most successful schoolboys' tournament between teams representative of the five unions in the Seddon Shield district. A meeting ;of delegates decided that the fixture be held in each centre in turn, but so far this year the New Zealand Rugby Union has not renewed the grant which made the tournament possible last year, and the West Coast Union, to whom the fixture was allotted this year, does not feel disposed to undertake- the tournament. It is understood that all the unions in the area will make a combined application to the New Zealand Union for assistance.
