96TH BIRTHDAY

MR. JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER

WORLD CONGRATULATIONS

NEW YORK,, July .7,

Mr. John D. Rockefeller,' sen., will celebrate his ninety-sixth birthday tomorrow, surrouhded by his closest relatives at his 500-acre estate in New Jersey.

Congratulatory messages from all parts of the world have been pouring in on the frail little man, who, however, is reported to be in better health than in previous years. The daily physical examinations to which he had been subjected last year when he suffered from a series of colds have been discontinued.

His rules of health are said to be: Do not worry, do not acquire too much weight, drink three quarts of water daily, and sleep in the fresh air.

For years Mr. John D. Rockefeller was remarkable because he was the wealthiest man in the world. Today he is remarkable because he became one of the healthiest. That fact is attested by his great age, but forty years ago he was a wreck,, a victim of acute dyspepsia, and was reported, to have offered a million dollars for a new stomach. He was warned that overwork, disregard of physical strain, and failure to take elementary health precautions were likely to cost him his life, and he began to decentralise control of his undertakings in order to retire. His retirement came in 1911, and with graduated exercise and careful diet he built up 'his health. He made a wager with Dr. Biggar, the physician who cured him, that he would outlive the doctor. That wager was won years ago, Dr. Biggar dying at the age of eighty-seven.
