THE KEA
I- (To the Editor.)
Sir,—As a lover of birds, I would like to draw the attention of the' New Zealand * Native ' Bird Protection Society to '.the report which appeared in your issue of today of a resolution passed by the Awatere County Council "that, a bounty of 2s 6d a beak be allowed for'keas." In, advocating the destruction of these birds several councillors referred to the serious menace to stock and stated that there is'not the slightest: doubt that a tremendous amount of damage was done by keas. I have before me a bulletin issued by the New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society in which grave doubts are expressed as to whether the, kea actually kills sheep at all, and that it is a much maligned bird. I should be glad to have an authoritative opinion as to whether these fascinating birds are as destructive as our sheep-owner friends woukl have us believe.—l am, etc., .-.■..
