ENGLISH AND N.Z. SPEED LIMITS.

Charged: with, having driven at a speed that might have been dangerous to the public,.Robert B. Watson appeared -before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Upper Hutt Court today. Inspector J. E. Ainsworth said that at about 7.30 p.m: on June 15 the defendant drove from the Cemetery Road, Taita, to the V.1.C., Lower Hutt, at a speed-of between 45 and 50 miles an hour, crossing five intersections. There was a fairly heavy line of traffic proceeding in. the opposite direction. When stopped, the defendant said, "I. am afraid this is my usual touring speed." , The defendant explained that lie had been out from England for five months, and in England there was no speed limit, one being able to drive as fast as one was able with safety. "That has been altered," pointed out the Magistrate. "That is so, your Worship, but it was true when I was there," replied the defendant. ' The defendant further stated that he had been driving for about seven years, and had had no previous complaints or convictions against him. He could see the 'lights of other' cars when he was passing the intersections,' and had powerful brakes. Inspector. Ainsworth said, that time was the biggest factor when it came to pulling up a.car, different motorists reacting at different times. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £2 ios. :
