ALL PARTS OF THE CITY

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The statements made by "Swimmer" criticising the proposed allocation of funds available merely show lack of appreciation of the swimming problems of the city. The reserves committee is to be commended on the scheme which brings about the greatest good to the greatest number.

Shelter sheds, distributed over our long sea front, where Nature has provided the water, will make-swimming possible (or more pleasant) to those whose homes are. within easy reach of the sea. The Western Suburbs and Ngaio, who' have long and patiently waited and have shown a commendable spirit of constructive assistance, are at last provided for.

Under existing conditions, the central city, our visitors, and Oriental Bay district have facilities for swimming; and surely it is the council's duty to provide facilities for all parts of the city before incurring further heavy expenditure where facilities already exist. The Oriental Bay scheme where shelter only is required (and is it free shelter that is wanted?) is elaborate at a cost of £5500 compared with the costs at other bays. Baths cannot be built at Karori and Ngaio for less than the sum set down as they are plain concrete baths with no tiling except on floors or frills as alleged. It is idle 1.0 suggest that a bath-such as serves Wellington College with GOO pupils can serve the Western Suburbs with 12,000 people and a rapidly-growing population. The reserves committee gave this matter full investigation and the council will do well .to ratify the proposals, unaltered.—l am,' etc., . ■ . SWIMMER No. 2. Edgßworth is one of those marvellous mixtures that bring peace on earth and good will to your pipe, Mild, surely; yet with a full-bodied character to its Burley mixture that has won many friends in many lands. 2 ounces, 2s 3d. i —Advt.
