EMPLOYMENT OF GIRLS
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I was particularly interested on reading in Saturday's "Evening Post" the letter by v "Father of a Family" regarding young girls who have no inclination to take up domestic service. I can quite understand why the average girl has no desire to interest herself in domestic work as the hours' are very long and the wages in most cases a mere pittance. After a perusal of the paper I find that out of a total of twenty-one positions advertised relating to domestic work there are only two that make any mention as to the wages per week. In both instances the amount is stated as 12s fid weekly. The remaining nineteen make no reference at all to the wages paid. I am able to sympathise with the girls who are unfortunately unable to obtain suitable board and lodgings. If "Father of a Family" had ever had the experience of working as a domestic servant he could appreciate more fully what an unthankful task housework can be.—l am, etc., .EX-BUTLER HOUSEMAN.
