SCOTTISH HARRIERS
In view of the provincial championships a light run was held from Lyall Bay over a portion of the new course. A one-mile handicap "run-in" finished off an enjoyable afternoon. From scratch J. Riddington< came through nicely to win by about 20 yards from W. A. Brown (115 yds), with J. Garty (50yds) and B. Woodcock (55yds), deat-heating for third place. "Chum" Mayne, a prominent half- and one-mile runner from Southland, now a member of the club, started off 10yds, but owing to lack of training and the heavy going was, unable to do-better than eighth. Prior to the run two "knock-out" competitions were held, long jump and shot-put, all off scratch. In the long jump, C. Bruce, a junior, performed very well to gain first place with a jump of 15ft lOin, with B. Elleray, 15ft Bin, second, and W. A. Brown, 15ft 7in, third. For the shot-putting event, Mrs. Murphy, mother of M. J. and J. Murphy, members of the club, gave a trophy to be competed for. flnce again W. A. Brown was in a place, this time first with a "put" of 34ft Bin, a fine effort for one who has not practised the event, M. J. Murphy, 27ft lOin, was second, and J. Murphy, 27ft 3in, third. Points gained in the long jump and one mile events will count for the club's "run-in" trophy.
