CYCLISTS AND MOTORISTS

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Inspector Fletcher, of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, is quite correct in his statement that cyclists should have a rear light. Until this is made compulsory cyclists will always be unsafe and a source of danger to motorists at night. The white mudguard is certainly helpful, but the rear reflector is absolutely useless, as often enough it cannot be seen until the vehicle behind is very close to the cyclist. In any case why should front lights be compulsory and not rear lights? I myself do quite a lot of cycling at nights and have fixed to my machine an inexpensive battery lamp showing a red light to give the oncoming motorist a fair chance. —I am, etc., ■ Petone, July 5. CYCLIST.
