PRUNING OF ROSES
HUTT GARDEN CIRCLE
It was surely a happy augury that a sprinkle of rain (as light as it was brief) fell upon the 60-odd enthusiastic spirits-who; .assembled at the christening ceremony of this scion of the Lower Hutt Horticultural Society (writes a correspondent). The first of a series of outdoor gatherings was held in the grounds of Messrs. 'E. Anstis and Son, Birdwood Road, Waiwhetu, when Mr., "Ted" Anstis 'gave a 1 comprehensive and lucid exhibition of the art of pruning roses as they should be pruned to make it easier for Nature to give more and better blooms. The unusually close attention and the intelligent questions asked by those around him (particularly .by the ladies) were an excellent tribute to the lecturette.
Among those present were the following:—Mesdames A. R. Gower, S. M. Hobbs, Ashley Duncan, Gordon Reid, P. G. Reid, Wm. Smith, F. B. Bott, A. B. Gordon, T. Stickells, McMillan, Hodder, Rainey, Bishop, Misses Maynod, Hutchinson, Bishop, Smith, Messrs. T. G. Clark (Orongorongo), N. Smith, W. Johnston, W. Hodder, A. Grierson, A. J. Nicholls, W. Blair ' ("Saltaire").
The next outdoor gathering will be held in a garden of native plants.
