DISGRACE TO PETONE
"A DANGEROUS GROUND"
, It is a remarkable thing that a sportloving community like Petone, whose Soccer club is known throughout New Zealand for its meritorious record/ in Chatham Cup games, should expect its own teams and visitors to play such a skilful game as Soccer on a ground that would make a Rugby ball bounce twice as crankily as it does.
Not only is 'that part of the Petone Recreation Ground unfit for play, but many responsible football officials have declared that it is dangerous. At the beginning of the season more than one .club made official complaint of the state of the surface ot the- rwibirnie Stadium, and with the opening of the Basin Reserve no more senior games were played there. Now, after a few weeks' use, the Petone Recreation Ground has achieved the apparently impossible by becoming worse tha.n the Stadium.
Visiting and local players have complained of the state of the ground and of the occasional lack of proper equipment there. The latest complaint came from the Petone Club, which stated that Andy Leslie last Saturday strained his foot there through catching it in a hole in the ground, and was a passenger for the rest of the game. ' ■ ■
What the cause of the trouble is only an expert can tell, but it seems that the surface has never recovered from the alteration made to it a few years ago when the level of the ground was raised. At present it is bumpy, wavy, and wholly devoid of grass in places. Soccer players will be glad to know that the Petone Borough Council is aware of the condition of the ground and that its reserves committee has recommended the closing of it to summer sports in order'to prepare it for the next football season. The management committee of the Wellington Football Association is also keeping a close watch on the position and it is probable that the ground will be vacated long before the season ends so that the council will have every opportunity of giving the large; Petone Soccer public a ground for next season that. will be in keeping with Petone's in the Soccer WOrld., ...' ...-. ..„.,., ....'';,.. -~,;.„ :;. : ,,.;:,;.a.,;;,;..u
