NO MORE HEART BALM
"Heart balm suits"—actions for breach of promise or alienation of affections —are now illegal in.New York State. Persons filing such suits in future will be liable to a fine up to £1000 and five years in prison. The last day before the law came into force saw a rush to evade such penalties. Over 150 suits were filed at the Supreme Court, and these are not expected to be finished with be- j fore 1938. It is predicted that the law will save men at least £2,000,000 a year. But many legal experts prophesy that women will rue the day they denounced members of their sex for seeking to capitalise their affections.
